Magento Analytics Workshop

Analysis tool to help the merchant make informed decisions for their online store.

I led a design thinking workshop (attended by 5 designers) to solve the problems we have with reports & dashboard. Prior to the workshop, I was responsible for understanding the scope, researching our competitors and the current state of our system. After the workshop, I proposed the Magento Analytics system which combine report and dashboard to give users meaningful data that will help merchant run their online store.

Target Users: Analytics Adminstrator, Analytics Viewer

Design Thinking Workshop

Step 1: Defining the problem

We brainstorm the problems for reports and dashboard that we have today. Then, categorize the problems and come up with these problem statements:

1.) Data is not meaningful (data points output)
2.) User doesn’t know what to do with the data (smartness of the system)
3.) People cannot relate to the data (Personalization)

Step 2: Asking Nested Why's

We ask nested whys to get to the real problem of why data is not meaningful?

1.) Too much, too many data points
2.) Data is from unreliable source
3.) Not Relevant Data
a.) It doesn’t match their business goal (KPI’s)
4.) Because I can’t take action, don’t know what to do.
a.) No correlation between data and goals or problems.
b.) Data doesn’t show you the gap between current state and business goals
      c.) Data is passive/dumb
                i.) No threshold alert, awareness
ii.) Have not assigned important or value to the data
d.) Don’t understand what I should be looking for
i.) It’s not personalized to me
                ii.) I don’t understand how report’s work

Step 3: Crazy 8's & Concept Creation

The objective of this exercise is to get really creative solutions, hence the name Crazy 8's. Each person brainstorm 8 solutions, then as a team we came up with 3 concepts.

Problem: How can we make data smart?

1.) Traveling dashboards on pages
2.) Big data & smart suggestions
3.) Setting Goals > Notify Potential Risks > Suggest Solution

Magento Analytics Ecosystem

I took merits of the concepts we came up during the workshop and the requirements by product owner to come up with the new ecosystem. I combined report and dashboard to propose "Analytics Ecosystem" because the goal of these features is really to give users meaningful data that will help merchant run their online store.

How dashboard and reports works together

In the dashboard, merchant can get and an overview of KPIs (key performance indicator) for their store. The merchant can then dive deeper into the reports that is linked with that particular KPI.

How do we make data meaningful

1. We provide smart suggestions so that merchant can improve their stores.
2. User can have a personalized dashboard based on their roles. For example: an inventory manager will want to look at different metrics than a tech supprt.
3. We show metrics based on the context of user's current task. For example: if the user is in a Product Management Page, we will show the top 5 products, or items that are popular and running out soon.

Analytics Viewer: Users who consume the data to make decisions in their day-to-day work. (i.e. sales manager, inventory manager, tech support, etc.)
Analytics Adminstrator: Users who create dashbaords and reports for the Analytics Viewer.
